In 2019, as part of its commitment to the environment and to planting trees in Belgium, Soltis has been proactively looking for a partner to carry out such a project. That's how we got in touch with Sylva Nova experts in forest management. Fox&Cie who were also looking to undertake a sustainable development approach, joined us in this wonderful project.

Project description
The 5-year project aims to help restore the forest landscape of the Avister forest in Esneux. A few years ago, this 75-hectare site had suffered storm damage. These hazards had led to the proliferation of brambles and invasive coppice. It was therefore necessary to give this forest a new lease of life through reforestation. To this end, we have agreed an ambitious action plan with Fox&Cie, coordinated by Sylva Nova.

Season 1 (2019-2020): achievements
First of all, it was essential to draw up a new management plan (focusing in particular on more responsible and sustainable management) to bring us into line with today's challenges. This has enabled us to obtain the prestigious FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification.
The most important project involved clearing 1.5 hectares of undergrowth and rehabilitating neglected areas. Some 7,500 trees were also planted. In total, +/- 4.2 Ha have been upgraded thanks to these actions, mainly in the northern part of the forest (corresponding to numbers 2 and 3 on the map). We also ensured that, despite the work, the forest remained accessible to the public. We feel this is essential so that visitors can observe the evolution.

Season 2 (2020-2021): achievements
Even though the Covid-19 pandemic had an impact on the project, work was able to continue thanks to the coordination of the teams and good management by Sylva Nova. Work for this second season was finalized in mid-March 2021 and concentrated mainly in zones 1 and 3, but also partially in zone 4 (see map).
The following actions were carried out: assisted natural regeneration, planting of islands and diversified species (notably oak and beech) to ensure biodiversity. In all, more than 2.5 hectares were covered this season, which will enable the equivalent of 5,180 trees to be replanted in the future.
What's more, in 2020, Alvan SPRL joined us in the project. We are delighted to count this company among our partners and friends.

What next?
As mentioned above, the project is spread over 5 years. Reforestation work will therefore continue, while keeping the forest accessible to the public and in particular to youth movements.
